Local material workflow

Fabric Normal Map Generator

Turn an evenly lit fabric close-up into a shallow weave material. This workflow uses a restrained strength preset and a procedural woven example so you can inspect thread direction before uploading your own texture.

Separate the printed pattern from the weave

A floral digital paper is a color design, while a close-up of woven cloth contains small surface structure. Either can be loaded, but the result means something different. A dark printed flower will be interpreted as height unless you prepare a separate, neutral weave image. For a realistic fabric material, keep the printed color pattern separate from the normal-map source.

Photograph cloth laid flat with diffuse lighting. Avoid strong folds, a ruler in the crop, loose background objects and directional specular highlights. A fold that belongs to the drape of a garment should usually come from geometry, not be baked into a tile that repeats across every part of the garment.

Use shallow relief for threads

The fabric preset starts at strength 1.25 with no blur and a Scharr edge operator. It uses a lower AO intensity of 0.6 and roughness adjustment of 0.65. These are editable artistic defaults, not measurements of cotton, linen or silk. The procedural woven sample makes their effect visible without requiring an account or an upload.

Look for alternating thread directions under the light. If the weave sparkles, develops jagged ridges or overwhelms the silhouette, reduce strength or add a little blur. Compare the final result at the distance where it will appear in the scene. A convincing close-up can still produce distracting noise when the same texture covers a full garment.

Check the repeat at the actual thread scale

Wrapped edge sampling is enabled for this preset because weave studies often repeat. It does not promise a seamless source image. A stripe, printed flower or change in exposure at the border remains visible unless you repair the input. Inspect the opposite-edge quality message, then repeat the exported maps on a flat plane in your renderer.

Set the texture scale to match the object. Enlarging a small weave across a whole sofa makes individual threads resemble ropes; shrinking it too far can make it disappear. This converter preserves pixel dimensions within the export limit but cannot infer centimeters per thread from a photograph with no reliable scale reference.

Know which fabric properties are outside the pack

You receive four 8-bit PNG maps: normal, height, AO and roughness. The tool does not produce fiber scattering, a sheen model, cloth simulation, opacity for lace or measured anisotropy. A woven normal map can support those effects in a renderer, but it cannot replace the corresponding shader and geometry settings.

Use the normal orientation expected by your engine and import data maps without a color-texture transform where the renderer requires it. Keep the original color design and source license alongside the ZIP. If a patterned fabric is intended for sale or publication, inspect that print colors have not accidentally become deep embossed shapes in the final material.

What you can download

Upload a PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 24 MB. Local processing reads the pixels in your browser and does not send the image to a server. The four map tabs show normal, height, ambient occlusion and roughness output. Download the selected 8-bit PNG or export all four maps in a ZIP. The free limit is 2048 pixels on the longest side; smaller images are not made more detailed by this conversion.

Pro Local unlocks individual PNGs up to 8K and ZIP or batch sources up to 4K, subject to the browser and archive limits shown in the workbench. The sample is only 384 by 384 pixels, so it remains that size when exported. Choose your own adequately sized source if you need a larger result. Higher resolution does not repair lighting or perspective errors in the source.

A short verification routine before using the pack

First compare the source and height map for false relief caused by color or shadows. Next move the preview light and check the normal direction. Then inspect opposite borders if the material will repeat. Finally open the downloaded PNGs or ZIP, check their dimensions and import a small test material into your renderer. The preview is a shading aid, not a measurement of physical material properties.

If a file cannot be decoded, choose a valid image or reload the procedural sample. Local exports continue to work when account services are temporarily unavailable; paid features require a verified entitlement. A failed local task shows a status message and can be cancelled or retried manually. Avoid running several large exports at once, especially on a phone. Keep the original source and test render so you can compare revisions rather than guessing from memory.
